Inglenook Farm story
The organic farm was started on the 10 August 2010. The first two years saw no growing at the farm, clearing of alien trees like the Port Jackson was done and slowly tests were done to see what the best area of the land was to use for vegetable growing.
Once the most suited area was used, the area was dug open and the alien species were put with Bokashi underneath the soil to help trap water and start feeding the soil for future growth. The area was covered with a large shade cloth and is now used as our main vegetable production area. At this stage we had the idea of using this space to grow vegetables for the Hotels, this idea later evolved into a 100% Organic vegetable delivery service which sent out its first bag in January 2016 and has not missed one week of deliveries ever since.
We have had challenges with water restrictions and extremely salty water which was affecting the crops, we have overcome this through the introduction of a water desalinator which allows us to pump pure water cleaner than municipal water to be used to feed our Organic vegetables. We only use natural food for our plants and never use any chemicals, EVER. We use our Organic chicken manure, our donkey manure, wild harvested kelp, self grown yarrow and comfrey as tea fertilizers for our plants and thats all
We have two resident donkeys on the farm. This mother and daughter combo can be seen running around and playing with wild buck while still performing a great roll of giving us manure to make compost with. We have a brood of chickens who happily wake us up each morning and whose main function on the farm is to provide us with Nitrogen rich manure to be used as a vegetable feed later on.
We have had major success with Tomatoes, Beans and Spinach at the farm which seem to love this growing environment each year. We are aiming to grow a wider variety of heirloom and organic vegetables in order to showcase the true beauty of the Organic movement.
Who we are
We are a farm-to-front-door Organic vegetable delivery service operating throughout Cape Town and the West Coast areas.
We are aiming to connect to the larger Organic community based in and around Cape Town in order to supply them with nutritious and delicious products and organic vegetables grown on our Permaculture farm based in Yzerfontein.
